December 2012

Well it’s been quite a year! The time has flown by with what we can only describe as the busiest & biggest year of our career!  We brought in the Bells live on BBC Scotland’s Hogmanay Show, completed a hugely successful tour of the UK, took two trips around the globe to Australia, had a lot of fun in Montreal and at Celtic Connections with our friends Le Vent Du Nord, as well as travelling to over 20 exciting summer festivals in the UK, Europe, North America and Asia. During all this we released our third album ‘Bann’ – a record we feel is our most focused and exciting to date.

To cap this all off we were incredibly honoured to receive the award for ‘Folk Band of the Year’ at the 2012 Scottish Traditional Music Awards which took place in Fort William last weekend. We were delighted just to be nominated alongside the fantastic RuraRua Macmillan Trio and the Paul Mckenna Band so to win was a real treat and we are immensely proud.

Its been a great adventure so far and as a band we’ve worked really hard to make music that means a great deal to us and that we are proud of. We’ve also received amazing support over the years for which we are very grateful. From our family and friends to Active Events (Lisa, Michelle, Susie & Claire), Creative Scotland, Bob Buchan, James Soars, Duncan Lyall, Andy Thorburn, Vertical Records and of course our former members Patsy Reid, Donal Brown and David Henderson (whom without, there would be no Breabach!! Thanks for all the hard work you put in over the years guys). Most importantly, thanks to all of you who took the time to vote and who continue to offer us the most invaluable support by coming to our gigs and buying our records. Thanks for enjoying the music, here’s to you all!!!

We are taking a few weeks off from the band right now whilst James Mackenzie gears up to record his solo album in 2013, Calum & James L are heading out for a few gigs with Man’s Ruin and Ewan & Megan are off doing some duo performances for Live Music Now. We also are looking forward to some down time with our families before the madness of Celtic Connections begins in January.

The Big Burns Night

As Burn’s night will be our first gig of 2013 we thought we might as well go at it full booner. So we have invited a host of fantastic musicians and creative types to join us for the party including Blazin’ Fiddles, Dougie Maclean, Kathleen Macinnes (STMA 2012 ‘Album of the Year’ winner), Liz Lochead and more special guests. Tickets are selling fast for this event so if you fancy coming along head over to the Celtic Connections website and book your tickets! The gig takes place on the 25th of January in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall at 7.30 pm.

The Making of Bann

We recently uploaded a short video documenting the recording process of Bann. The video was made by the fantastic Magnus Graham. Thanks again Magnus!  Watch it here –
