Breabach News

January 2018

Happy New Year and warm wishes to all for 2018!

We’re very excited to share news of our plans for this coming year and also to catch you up on our autumn adventures from last year.

October kicked off with some lovely gigs in Scotland and England. We took part in the Paisley Spree Festival with our friends Talisk and Louis Abott before heading on to Perth Concert Hall, sharing the stage with the wonderful Kris Drever.

Eastern Canada was next on the agenda for what proved to be a wonderful two weeks of music and friendship with Chris ‘Old man Luedecke‘ and Joel Hunt. Non musical highlights included a fine haircut and sing song at the Humble Barber PEI; the Potato Museum in New Brunswick; and a visit to the wild, wind swept archipelago of the Iles de la Madeleine, Quebec.

Post Canada we have been busy working on material for a new album, keep your eyes and ears peeled for more news on this! We also played an unusual but very fun St Andrews day show underneath a Concorde at the National Museum of Flight.

We’re back out on the road again this coming February around the UK. Hope you can join us at one of the gigs! We’ve got the day off on the 25th, let us know if you have any ideas!

Hope you’ve all had a great start to the year! We’re currently enjoying a brief moment of fine weather in Glasgow so thought it was time for a catch up as we move into Spring. We had a very enjoyable tour of the UK in February, a huge thanks to all who put on the shows, make us lovely food, accommodate us and most importantly to all of you that come out and support live music. We greatly appreciate it!

We kicked off the tour at home, with a sold-out show at Celtic Connections celebrating the music from Astar (our small film below will give you an insight into the show, made my our friend Sam Hurt). After a whirlwind 4 weeks we played our final show of the tour in the Paisley Arts Centre (fingers crossed for city of culture 2021). We’re now resting up for a few weeks before the summer festival season kicks off, but not before we head to the Royal Albert Hall for a bit of a knees up…

We’re incredibly honoured to be nominated in the best group category at this years Radio 2 Folk Awards. It’s amazing to recognised amongst such amazing artists The GloamingThe Furrow Collective and  9Bach. We wish them, along with all the nominees all the best for the awards. They take place on 5th April at the Royal Albert Hall, London. You can listen live on the night:

Our resident bass player, James Lindsay is bringing out his own solo album entitled Strand this year. It’s a darkly atmospheric blend of instrumental folk and contemporary-jazz brought together by some of the top cross-genre players in Scotland. Released on June 2nd it’s available for pre-order now at:

Ewan and the Celtman

As many of you may know we love a good adventure/sporting challenge! In mid March, Ewan set off to Cyprus to take part in the UCI Grand Fondo World Series with Team Almyra. Based at the wonderful Hotel Almyra in Paphos, it was a great opportunity to spend time cycling through beautiful scenery with some of Scotland’s top endurance athletes and coaches. It also served as an important opportunity to fit in some much needed quality training for the Celtman Extreme Triathlon this June. Keeps your eyes and ears peeled over the summer for news of Ewan’s new album release ‘Transitions’ based on his experience of taking part one of the toughest multi sport challenges going, the Celtman.

All the best for now!

Breabach News

Winter 2016

Greetings of the season to you all!

As we near the end of 2016 we are reflecting on another fun and action packed year for the band. We rounded things off in a very special way at the Scots Trad Music Awards. where we were delighted and very humbled to pick up both Folk Band of the Year and Album of the Year. A sincere thank you to all who voted and also to the wonderful team who work so hard behind the scenes in support and make it possible for us to literally live our dreams. We are very grateful to all of the Active Events team – past and present, the legend that is Bob Buchan, our long suffering engineer Iain ThomsonAlex McNutt and to all the promoters, venue’s and festivals who give us the opportunity to play!

Our album ‘Astar’ was inspired by our travels, the people we have met and musicians with whom we have collaborated. It is a multicultural celebration and a work we are very proud of. Bringing it to life would not have been possible without the energy, skills and talents of Greg Lawson Stuart Hamilton @ Castlesound Studios, Daniel Warren, James Morrison, Stuart Curnow and our guests, Yirrmal,  Mark Atkins, Scotty Morrison, Olav Luksengård Mjelva and our dear champignons Le Vent du nord, each of who added their own beautiful colour to the record.

Finally, to all of you who come out to support us at live shows and who buy our records, our heartfelt thanks, there’d be none of this without you!

It’s been a year tinged with sadness also and we have lost many special souls including those who have been so influential and important in our development both individually and collectively. Love, thanks and farewell to John Macdougall, Angus Grant Jnr, Maggie Macdonald & Bill Kyle.

Celtic Connections

We’re taking a bit of time off now, but can’t wait to start back with a bang at Celtic Connections 2017. On February the 3rd we’ll be at the Glasgow City Halls to put on a special show featuring some of good friends (Greg Lawson, Olav Luksengård Mjelva & Pierre-Luc Dupuis) for a reimagining of some of the music from Astar. The fantastic Beoga will also be sharing the bill with us, guaranteed to be a great craic night of music.

Tickets here:

Also keep you eyes peeled for a special Burn’s Night celebration on BBC Radio Scotland coming live from the festival on the 25th!

Individually we’ll be out in various different guises over the festival. James Mackenzie & Calum are appearing as part of a new ten-strong piper collaboration Tryst, catch them on the 21st Jan (Also check them out on Facebook!).
