We’re very excited to share news of our plans for this coming year and also to catch you up on our autumn adventures from last year.
October kicked off with some lovely gigs in Scotland and England. We took part in the Paisley Spree Festival with our friends Talisk and Louis Abott before heading on to Perth Concert Hall, sharing the stage with the wonderful Kris Drever.
Eastern Canada was next on the agenda for what proved to be a wonderful two weeks of music and friendship with Chris ‘Old man Luedecke‘ and Joel Hunt. Non musical highlights included a fine haircut and sing song at the Humble Barber PEI; the Potato Museum in New Brunswick; and a visit to the wild, wind swept archipelago of the Iles de la Madeleine, Quebec.
Post Canada we have been busy working on material for a new album, keep your eyes and ears peeled for more news on this! We also played an unusual but very fun St Andrews day show underneath a Concorde at the National Museum of Flight.
UK TOUR
We’re back out on the road again this coming February around the UK. Hope you can join us at one of the gigs! We’ve got the day off on the 25th, let us know if you have any ideas!
We’re very excited to be one of a number of Scottish artists appearing at the amazing Folk Alliance International conferencewhich runs from the 14-18th of February in Kansas City. A huge thanks to Showcase Scotland for their support and hard work pulling this together, it’s sure to be a weekend to remember!
AUSTRALIA 2018
This spring we will be back on our antipodean adventures, revisiting some of our favourite festivals alongside some new ones and a host of shows in between. We can’t wait and a huge thanks to our friends at Woodfordia for putting this wonderful tour together!
After the success of James Mackenzie’s self-titled debut release we’re excited to share his new release with you Sròmos. Expect James’ typical melodic flair and instrumental prowess coupled with grooves, electric instrumentation and multi layered textures.
Breabach won’t be appearing at Celtic Connections this year but it would be amiss to not mention the most amazing festival that takes place in our adopted home town, Glasgow. We’ll all be appearing in various different projects over the next few weeks so keep an eye out if you’re around for the festival.
Hope you’ve all had a great start to the year! We’re currently enjoying a brief moment of fine weather in Glasgow so thought it was time for a catch up as we move into Spring. We had a very enjoyable tour of the UK in February, a huge thanks to all who put on the shows, make us lovely food, accommodate us and most importantly to all of you that come out and support live music. We greatly appreciate it!
We kicked off the tour at home, with a sold-out show at Celtic Connections celebrating the music from Astar (our small film below will give you an insight into the show, made my our friend Sam Hurt). We were really happy to see the show receive a 5 star review in the Scotsman, thanks to Sue Wilson for her thoughts and kind words.
“As polished as it was passionate, matching fiery intensity with exquisite finesse, this was a magnificent set.” ☆☆☆☆☆
After a whirlwind 4 weeks we played our final show of the tour in the Paisley Arts Centre (fingers crossed for city of culture 2021). We’re now resting up for a few weeks before the summer festival season kicks off, but not before we head to the Royal Albert Hall for a bit of a knees up…
We’re incredibly honoured to be nominated in the best group category at this years Radio 2 Folk Awards. It’s amazing to recognised amongst such amazing artists The Gloaming, The Furrow Collective and 9Bach. We wish them, along with all the nominees all the best for the awards. They take place on 5th April at the Royal Albert Hall, London. You can listen live on the night: http://www.bbc.co.uk/events/e5qgwh

Ewan and the Celtman
As many of you may know we love a good adventure/sporting challenge! In mid March, Ewan set off to Cyprus to take part in the UCI Grand Fondo World Series with Team Almyra. Based at the wonderful Hotel Almyra in Paphos, it was a great opportunity to spend time cycling through beautiful scenery with some of Scotland’s top endurance athletes and coaches. It also served as an important opportunity to fit in some much needed quality training for the Celtman Extreme Triathlon this June. Keeps your eyes and ears peeled over the summer for news of Ewan’s new album release ‘Transitions’ based on his experience of taking part one of the toughest multi sport challenges going, the Celtman.
As we near the end of 2016 we are reflecting on another fun and action packed year for the band. We rounded things off in a very special way at the Scots Trad Music Awards. where we were delighted and very humbled to pick up both Folk Band of the Year and Album of the Year. A sincere thank you to all who voted and also to the wonderful team who work so hard behind the scenes in support and make it possible for us to literally live our dreams. We are very grateful to all of the Active Events team – past and present, the legend that is Bob Buchan, our long suffering engineer Iain Thomson, Alex McNutt and to all the promoters, venue’s and festivals who give us the opportunity to play!
Our album ‘Astar’ was inspired by our travels, the people we have met and musicians with whom we have collaborated. It is a multicultural celebration and a work we are very proud of. Bringing it to life would not have been possible without the energy, skills and talents of Greg LawsonStuart Hamilton @ Castlesound Studios, Daniel Warren, James Morrison, Stuart Curnow and our guests, Yirrmal, Mark Atkins, Scotty Morrison, Olav Luksengård Mjelva and our dear champignons Le Vent du nord, each of who added their own beautiful colour to the record.
Finally, to all of you who come out to support us at live shows and who buy our records, our heartfelt thanks, there’d be none of this without you!
It’s been a year tinged with sadness also and we have lost many special souls including those who have been so influential and important in our development both individually and collectively. Love, thanks and farewell to John Macdougall, Angus Grant Jnr, Maggie Macdonald & Bill Kyle.

Hope you’re all enjoying the summer so far! Since our last update we’ve been laying quite low, however we did manage a fun weekend up at Skye Live, a visit to Germany for Festspiele Mecklenburg (where we also got to work with the local youth orchestra) as well as fitting in a few marathons and cycle sportifs for good measure! Now though over in Breabach HQ we’re getting the clothes packed, pipes tuned and suncream applied (optimistic) for our run of summer festivals which kicks off this coming weekend. First stop is the Byre in the Botanicsseries in St Andrews with our good pals – amazing Orcadian band Fara. Should be a great evening in the park! We then head straight down south to Priddy Folk Festival where we will be closing out the Sunday evening. Hope to see you there! The following weekends will see us visiting Tiree, Lewis, Trowbridge, Cambridge, Aboyne, Belladrum, Crieff and Italy. Full details below.
